What I Learned From Challenging My Own Creative Assumption: Clean & Simple White Space

You can not make a bad layout, Lynnette!! 🙂 My struggle is that I always want to dump everything on the page, so I tried to challenge myself with less is more…. I did it, yet I still look at it and I am itching to open the tiff back up and add to it… haha! So not sure I was very successful in the challenge… but I’m ready to try it again… http://www.sweetshoppecommunity.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=267933&title=my-style&cat=500

Ooo I like what you did Rebecca! I do know about itching to open it back up though, hahaha.

And I assure you, I can make a bad layout. Those are just the ones that get renamed “version 1” and then eventually get deleted once I’ve made something I like, LOL!

When I started in digi in 2008, I thought you “had” to be a white space scrapbooker. I tried for a while, but figured out I wanted to feel my items were more grounded to the page (rather than gently tossed into a corner). It took time and experimentation, but I eventually my preferred style found me.

The first thing I thought when I saw your example was – “the photo needs to be so much bigger” – but then I disagreed when you wanted to add more embellishments. I tried the heavily clustered look on for a spell and I don’t have the patience for it. But I totally agree that stretching your creative muscles is what it takes to find your best/idea scrapbooking self.

One caveat though, when you do find your style, make sure to really embrace it and just keep creating. I think we can spend too much time trying new things vs. doing what we know works. One of those is a lot more effective at moving you forward.

Great points Jennifer! I’d be interested to know how many beginner scrappers felt their style had to be whatever was trendy at the time they started. I know in 2006 when I started, everything was angled and as hard as I tried I could never make it work for me. It wasn’t until I realized that it just wasn’t my thing that my style started to gel.

And I totally agree about embracing your style once you’ve found it – I’ve certainly done that, LOL! But I do think there’s a lot of people who get stuck before they ever really find a style they love, so a challenge like this is a great way for them to get their feet wet, so-to-speak. And since I love the creative side of scrapbooking, I’m all about continuous growth creatively, but I know that’s not everyone’s cup of tea. 😀

I agree with Rebecca…you and bad layouts=impossible! 🙂 I’m in love with your page, but I’m glad you aren’t changing your style! I recently pushed myself to do a page totally out of my style too: http://www.the-lilypad.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=75390&title=you-love-me&cat=all

    • Lynnette says:

Haha, I so wish I’d saved some of my layout versions that didn’t see the light of day. I’ll have to remember the next time it happens (because I have no doubt it will) since it’d be fun to share WHY it wasn’t working for me.

Cute page Natalie! I love all the talk bubble cutouts, so fun!

  4. Working my way through these challenges. Will report back with my progress. I am really loving this weekly inspiration. I love how each week expands thoughts and explores new ones. Definitely awesome.
